What is
Infovox Text-To-Speech ? |
|
Text-to-speech
is a technology that enables the automatic processing of written text to
produce speech output.
Infovox
Text-to-Speech converters convert all orthographic (normally spelled) and
phonetic text into syntetic speech.
This
synthesis is multilingual and is available in 12 languages at the present
time: American English, British English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French,
German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish.
It
has five set voices and is also able to store individual voices.
Aspiration and intonation can also be varied. Individiual phrases can be
stored, and individual pronunciation lexicons constructed for each
language. The user can store the pronunciation of words which do not
follow the pronunciation rules, e.g. personal names, in the pronunciation
lexicon.
The
speed of reading can be varied all the way up to 400 words per minute and
you can read the whole text, sentence by sentence, word by word or letter
by letter. |

How does
it work ? |
|
Text-to-speech
conversion is performed in two stages.

First,
the entered text is converted into phonetic text by using both
pronunciation lexicons and general pronunciation rules. Special rules
are used for numbers, amounts, abbreviations, etc.

Secondly,
the phonetic text is converted to speech sounds by means of rules
which control a speech production model, i.e. an electronic model of
the human speech organ.
Two
kinds of speech production models are available:

Formant
based with low memory requirement (less than 300 KB)

diphone
based, built with a library of pre-recorded human speech diphones,
for even improved naturalness.
